Candles and a reed diffuser on a wooden tray among cushions

Choose a candle when you want scent and light together for an evening, a diffuser when you want a room to smell the same all day without a flame, and a room spray when you want fragrance at once, for a moment. Most homes end up using all three, each where it suits: a diffuser in the hallway, a spray before guests arrive, a candle once the lamps are on.

Candle, Diffuser or Room Spray?

The three formats differ in two ways that matter more than the scent itself: whether they need a flame, and how long the fragrance lasts. A candle releases scent while it burns and needs you in the room. A diffuser works continuously, either through reeds or, in an electric diffuser, as a fine mist. A spray is instant, and fades as the room airs.

  • Candle: flame, light and scent together; for evenings and rooms you are sitting in.
  • Reed diffuser: no flame and no power; a steady background scent for weeks.
  • Electric diffuser: no flame; a mist you can switch on, off or set to a timer.
  • Room spray: no flame; instant fragrance for a room or, where the label allows, fabrics.

When a Candle Suits

A candle is the most atmospheric of the three, because it changes the light as well as the air. It suits a living room or a dining table in the evening, a bath, or any room where you will stay for an hour or two. Choose by scent family first, then by the vessel, which stays in the room long after the candle is lit.

Focdenit's Jazmin & Coco Candle pairs jasmine with creamy coconut, made with 100% vegetal wax and essential oils and hand-poured in Mallorca, in a white glass jar. Alyssa Ashley's Oceanic Breeze Candle brings a fresh scent inspired by the sea, in a square glass vessel with a single wick. La Casa de los Aromas Luxurious Scented Candle is a generous 650 g in a black glass container; the pack names its fragrance Asian Flowers.

Place a candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, and never leave a lit candle unattended.

When a Diffuser Suits

A diffuser is the answer for rooms you pass through, rooms you leave, and homes where a flame is not practical. It works quietly in the background, so the scent becomes part of the room rather than an occasion.

Reed diffusers draw fragrance up through the sticks and release it into the air without heat or power. We cover them in depth, from placing the bottle to turning the reeds, in Reed Diffusers: How to Scent a Room Without a Flame. Three to consider here. Bahama & Co. Citrus Grove Reed Diffuser draws bergamot, lemon and green leaf through rattan stems, in a low, weighted clear glass vessel suited to a tabletop, shelf or bathroom; the house gives it up to 12 weeks. Gorjuss Rosebud Reed Diffuser blends wildflower, rose and honeysuckle in a 100 ml refillable glass bottle with a decorative doll detail. Cristalinas Green Glass Reed Diffuser holds 180 ml of an alcohol-free dama de noche fragrance, a night-scented flower, in a faceted glass bottle, for up to eight weeks.

An electric diffuser turns water and fragrance into a fine, cool mist, and gives you a control a reed diffuser cannot: you choose when it runs and for how long. La Casa de los Aromas DecoStone is a cool mist aroma diffuser and humidifier with a white ceramic top, a wood-like base and 1H, 2H and 3H timer settings. The same house's Waves Aroma Diffuser uses ultrasonic cold mist in a wave-textured conical form, made for small to medium rooms. Pranarôm's Modern Diffuser offers continuous or intermittent mist, with an integrated light glowing softly through its vertical slats. Fill each one as its maker directs, and switch it off before refilling or cleaning.

When a Room Spray Suits

A room spray is fragrance on demand. It is the quickest way to freshen a room before guests arrive, after cooking, or when you open a room that has been closed. The scent is immediate and does not linger as long as a diffuser's, which is exactly why it is useful: you decide when, and how much.

Read the label before you spray near fabrics, because sprays differ. Alvarez Gomez Bruma de Almohada is a 300 ml aerosol-free pump spray with a citrus fragrance, which the pack names Agua de Colonia Concentrada; it is made to be misted into the room or lightly over bedding and curtains. Cristalinas Ocean Breeze Room Spray, 250 ml with a trigger nozzle, is an odour eliminator suitable for textiles; test delicate fabrics first. Instituto Español Gotas Frescas is a 500 ml spray for refreshing rooms, to be sprayed lightly into the air and kept off fabrics and surfaces.

Room Size and Strength

In a small room, such as a bathroom, a study or a dressing area, a compact reed diffuser or a light spray is usually enough, and a large candle can feel heavy. In a larger living room or an open-plan space, a candle scents the area around it while it burns, and a diffuser may need a larger bottle, more reeds or a second diffuser at the far end. Electric diffusers often state the room size they suit, as the Waves model does. Whatever the format, start lighter than you think: a scent you notice as you walk in, then barely register, is the right strength.

Scenting Room by Room

The pieces above each name the rooms they were made for, and together they make a useful plan.

  • Hallway and entrance: a reed diffuser, for a scent that greets you at the door. Gorjuss names entryways; the Cristalinas diffuser suits a hallway console.
  • Living room: a candle for the evening, with a diffuser for the day.
  • Bedroom: a timer-set electric diffuser, such as DecoStone beside the bed, or a light mist over the curtains with a spray made for fabrics.
  • Bathroom: a compact reed diffuser, such as Bahama & Co. Citrus Grove, away from direct heat.
  • Before guests arrive: a room spray, a few minutes ahead.

If you use more than one format in the same space, keep to one scent family, citrus with citrus or floral with floral, so that the room smells composed rather than crowded. In open-plan rooms, a single scent for the whole space works best.

How to Choose

If you are scenting a home for the first time, begin with a reed diffuser in the hallway. It asks nothing of you, it runs for weeks, and it will tell you quickly whether you prefer a fresh, floral or warm scent, which makes choosing your first candle and spray far easier.
